A Letter To Me

One of my favorite country songs is one called "Letter to me" by Brad Paisley who by the way, is on like boil corn! It's a song about a grown man wishing he could send a letter back to himself when he was 17 to help himself understand the present, predict the future, and tell himself he'll turn out just fine. Sometimes we get so caught up in present situations and we don't see past our noses. It got me thinking of what I'll tell myself if I, as an adult, could go back and tell my 17 year old self. We all make mistakes and if we knew then what we know now, how many of us will go back and change the past. I know for myself, there would be much I'll change because I've made some stupid ones.

Dear Me,

Life flies by. You're 27 already and it was just yesterday Mom took you for Chinese food with Kavita, Lindsay, and Marsha for your 18th birthday. Remember Mom gave you the gold anklet you wanted...take care of it because you'll lose it. Your high school friends would always be with you even though you guys would split up after high-school. Enjoy every single day of Providence because you'll miss those high-school days and all the memories you made there. They would truly be the best days of your life. You'll laugh until you cry every single day and won't have a worry in the world. Good friends would become far and few in between so cherish them and don't make enemies.

Don't disown Karen for stabbing you in the back...he wasn't worth. Troy would never love you back, but would always be around as a good lifetime friend. As you get older, you'll realise it doesn't matter that much what other people think of you so just be yourself. Even though you thought Sister Phillip was the devil re-incarnate and all the Providence rules were overbearing, trust me, you'll take everything you learnt from there with you for the rest of your life and it truly shapes who you become. Take every opportunity to be closer to God, because you'll call on him time after time to give you patience, strength, and understanding.

Your mother is the smartest and wisest person you know. Listen to her because she lives for you. You might think she's old-fashioned and strict but you'll turn out just like her...more old-fashioned and stricter. People would mistake her for you and you'll even sound like her over the phone. You should have listened to her when she told you not to go Nuts, but you like to learn the hard way. Trust when I say that you definitely learnt the hard and painful way that night.

You're a lover, not a hater and you'll love many. Every boy you're with, you'll think you'll marry them but you won't find the true one for many many years after. Peter would be a great person, but not the greatest person for you. That's going to be a long, hard relationship but you'll turn out to be friends in the end. Moving back to Trinidad after college won't be a mistake. You'll enjoy every day and you'll reconnect with old friends and have times you'll never forget. Don't do things you know are wrong. If you're in doubt, ask yourself if you will be proud to tell your parents.

P.S. Life will fly by, so enjoy every second of it.
